The Polgár Phenomenon: The Woman Who Beat Kasparov

♛

The real Queen's Gambit

"The Queen's Gambit" was fiction. Judit Polgár was real. This documentary tells how a girl from Budapest, raised to prove a theory about genius, grew up to beat Garry Kasparov and nearly every World Champion of her era.

The experiment

Her father, László Polgár, believed geniuses are made, not born, and set out to prove it by raising his three daughters, Susan, Sofia and Judit, on intensive chess training at home. In the 1980s, when leading players openly dismissed women's chances against men, the Polgár sisters became the test case.

What Judit achieved

Judit became a grandmaster at 15, breaking Bobby Fischer's record as the youngest ever at the time. The video covers her encounters with Kasparov, including facing him at 17. She went on to beat Kasparov, Anand and Karpov, reached world No. 8 and remains the only woman ever to break into the overall top ten. She retired from competitive chess in 2014.

Who should watch

Anyone who loved "The Queen's Gambit," anyone interested in the nature-versus-nurture debate, and every young player who's been told a game isn't for them. No chess knowledge needed.

The Queen’s Gambit was fiction — but Judit Polgár’s story was real.
At just 17, she faced Garry Kasparov — the world’s No.1 and the most powerful man in chess.
What followed would change the game forever.

In the 1980s, the idea that a woman could compete with men was laughed at.
Fischer said women were “terrible.” Kasparov claimed they were “weaker fighters.”
Then came a family from Budapest who decided to prove the world wrong.

Their father, László Polgár, believed geniuses are made, not born.
So he raised his three daughters — Susan, Sofia, and Judit — to test that theory.
The result? A revolution.
By the time Judit was 15, she had won the Hungarian Championship. By 25, she had beaten every living World Champion — including Kasparov, Anand, and Karpov — and reached World No. 8, the only woman ever to do so.
