What Is the Italian Game?

The Italian Game is one of the oldest and most enduringly popular openings in chess, arising after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4. White immediately develops the bishop to its most active square, targeting the f7 pawn and preparing rapid central control. The Italian Game chess opening is beloved at every level because it leads to rich, principled positions full of strategic depth — neither side is forced into sharp, highly theoretical lines unless they choose to be.

After decades in the shadow of the Ruy Lopez, the Italian Game has enjoyed a dramatic renaissance at the highest levels. Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, and virtually every top GM now regularly employ it. With over 1,246 instructional videos on ChessTerra.com covering every aspect, it's one of the most thoroughly studied openings on the site.

Historical Origins and Famous Champions

The Italian Game is among the oldest recorded chess openings. Gioacchino Greco documented it in the early 17th century, and it dominated 19th-century chess theory under the name "Giuoco Piano" (quiet game in Italian). The Evan's Gambit — a swashbuckling piece sacrifice with 4.b4 — was particularly fashionable in the Romantic era.

The opening fell somewhat out of fashion in the 20th century as the Ruy Lopez was considered more demanding. However, modern chess engines have rehabilitated the Italian, showing that the resulting positions are deeply complex beneath their quiet surface. Magnus Carlsen, Anatoly Karpov, and José Raúl Capablanca all used Italian-type positions to demonstrate the power of subtle, long-term manoeuvring.

Key Strategic Ideas and Pawn Structures

The Italian Game produces several distinct pawn structures depending on the variation, but some themes recur throughout:

  • The central tension: Black typically responds with ...Bc5 (the Giuoco Piano) or ...Nf6 (the Two Knights). Both sides battle for control of d4 and d5.
  • The d3-d4 plan: In the modern Italian (3...Bc5 4.c3 Nf6 5.d3), White builds slowly with d3 then d4, creating a solid central pawn chain and avoiding early simplification.
  • Bishop on c4 vs bishop on b3: Once Black plays ...d6-d5 (or White plays d4), the Italian bishop typically retreats to b3 where it retains activity against f7 while avoiding exchange.
  • Knight manoeuvres: The knight route Nf3-h4-f5 or d2-f1-g3-f5 is a recurring attacking idea, placing a powerful piece on f5 targeting Black's kingside.
  • Minority attack and endgame pressure: The Italian often transposes to long endgames where White's better-coordinated pieces and pawn majority prove decisive — a key reason Carlsen favours it.

Main Variations and Critical Sub-Lines

The Giuoco Piano (3...Bc5 4.c3 Nf6 5.d3 or 5.d4)

The "quiet game" in its modern form. After 5.d3 0-0 6.0-0 d6 7.a4 a5 (or 7...Bb6), both sides manoeuvre for position in a slow strategic battle. This is the main line at top level today — Carlsen and Caruana have played hundreds of games in this structure.

The Evans Gambit (3...Bc5 4.b4)

White sacrifices a pawn for rapid development and a strong centre. Considered somewhat unsound at the very top but devastating at club level. Kasparov revived it memorably against Anand in 1995.

The Two Knights Defence (3...Nf6)

Black immediately counterattacks with 3...Nf6, leading to sharp play after 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5. The Fried Liver Attack (5...Nxd5 6.Nxf7) is one of the most famous tactical set-pieces in chess. The more solid 5...Na5 or 5...b5 lead to complex strategic battles.

The Fried Liver Attack (4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.Nxf7)

A stunning knight sacrifice that tears open Black's king position. Objectively unclear but extremely dangerous in practice — essential knowledge for any Italian Game player.

Advantages and Disadvantages — Who Should Play It?

The Italian Game chess opening has something for everyone:

  • Positional players will love the modern Giuoco Piano — long manoeuvring battles where understanding beats memorisation
  • Tactical players can explore the Evans Gambit and Two Knights for sharp, attacking play
  • Club players benefit enormously because the strategic themes (piece coordination, pawn centre, king safety) are universal chess lessons

The main limitation is that precise play is required in many lines — Black has several ways to equalise if White isn't careful. The Ruy Lopez is considered marginally more "pressing" at the very top level, but the Italian is fully respectable for any player.

Famous Grandmaster Games to Study

  • Carlsen vs Anand, Shamkir 2014 — A masterclass in the modern Italian, showing how to squeeze a positional advantage over many moves.
  • Kasparov vs Anand, PCA World Championship 1995 (Evans Gambit) — Kasparov's aggressive revival of the Evans destroyed Anand's preparation.
  • Morphy vs Duke of Brunswick, Paris 1858 — The most famous Romantic-era game began as an Italian-style position. Morphy's rapid development and sacrificial attack remain the gold standard.
  • Caruana vs Carlsen, Grenke Chess Classic 2019 — Both players exploring the deepest ideas of the modern Italian at the World Championship level.

Practical Tips for Club Players

  • Start with the modern Giuoco Piano (d3 system). It's flexible, less theoretical than the d4 systems, and teaches you crucial pawn structure ideas.
  • Learn the Fried Liver. Even if you never play it, knowing it sharpens your tactical vision and forces you to understand Black's defensive resources.
  • Study how White uses the bishop on c4/b3. The Italian bishop is the defining piece — understanding its long-term role (pressure on f7, potential for Bxd5 exchanges) is the key strategic lesson.
  • Watch ChessTerra's 1,246 Italian Game videos to see how GMs handle typical middlegame positions — especially the knight manoeuvres to f5 and the typical plans after d4 is played.
  • Don't neglect Black's view. Playing the Italian from both sides will deepen your understanding enormously.
