Wesley So vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, E06, Catalan, Closed
2018 Chess Candidates Tournament, Round 11

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov faced Wesley in yet another Catalan today. Before round 11 he was at 6/10, trailing behind the current leader, Fabiano Caruana by only half a point, so he definitely didn’t want to risk defeat and the opening suited him. It was Wesley So who decided to go for such a well analyzed and theoretically trodden variation which provides very little tactical possibilities for either player.

He only had 4 point before the game, so he only stood a mathematical chance to win the Candidates Tournament, which is why I think he should have gone for a much sharper opening. He has nothing to lose, so why not play beautiful attacking chess instead of going for the Catalan once more.
