This is the first video in the series on the great Mikhail Tal, played in 1949, when he was 13 years old. This is his first recorded tournament, played in his home town of Riga.

He learned chess when he was 6, so heโ€™d probably been playing for a while, but the games werenโ€™t saved.

Mikhail Tal was known for his tactical genius and his beautiful attacking play. He was also a very good strategic and positional player, and his endgames and openings were on a very high level too. Most people donโ€™t think of him as a well rounded player. I hope I will manage to convince them otherwise during the course of the series.

I will be analyzing all tournament games Tal played. One (or more) each Thursday.
