In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov analyzes a game played by the world champion Magnus Carlsen, where he SHOCKED his opponent with the Halloween Gambit. The classical Halloween Gambit follows the move order: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nxe5. At first, it may seem like a beginnerโ€™s mistake and White overlooked that the pawn is protected by Blackโ€™s knight on c6.

However, thatโ€™s not the case and White has some compensation even though the reason for this sacrifice is totally unclear; and the move itself can be a shocker for your opponent. In this game, Carlsen played this gambit in a slightly different move order. An interesting trivia is that Magnus Carlsen was only 11-years old when he played this game.
