The Ruy Lopez (also called the Spanish Game) is the most prestigious and deeply analysed of all chess openings, arising after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5. White's bishop pins the knight on c6 — the defender of the e5 pawn — indirectly pressuring Black's central position. The Ruy Lopez chess opening has been played in World Championship matches for over 150 years and remains one of White's most ambitious tries for an advantage. It is the opening where the deepest ideas of positional and strategic chess converge.
With 1,049 instructional videos on ChessTerra.com dedicated to the Ruy Lopez and its many sub-variations, you'll find world-class instruction on every branch of this vast opening tree.
The opening is named after Ruy López de Segura, a Spanish priest who analysed it in his 1561 book — one of the earliest chess manuals. He recognised the positional principle: by attacking the knight that defends e5, White creates long-term pressure on Black's central pawn.
The Ruy Lopez has been the weapon of choice for virtually every World Champion. Wilhelm Steinitz used it to develop positional chess theory. José Raúl Capablanca refined the endgame techniques. Bobby Fischer famously said "Best by test: 1.e4" and played the Ruy Lopez as his primary weapon. Garry Kasparov won landmark World Championship games with it, and Magnus Carlsen continues to use it at the highest level today.
The Ruy Lopez chess opening generates several distinct but related strategic themes:
Black challenges the bishop immediately. White retreats to a4 to maintain the pin. This leads to the richest branches of the Ruy Lopez — the Closed Spanish (4...Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3) is the main highway.
The "Berlin Wall" — after 4.0-0 Nxe4 5.d4 Nd6 6.Bxc6 dxc6 7.dxe5 Nf5 8.Qxd8+ Kxd8, a queenless middlegame arises. Black has the bishop pair but a compromised structure. The Berlin became the main drawing weapon against 1.e4 after Kramnik used it to neutralise Kasparov in the 2000 World Championship match. Today it's enormously theoretical.
After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.c3 d5, Black sacrifices a pawn for rapid piece activity and kingside attack. The Marshall Attack remains the sharpest and most theoretically complex weapon against the Ruy Lopez — White must know the antidote lines to survive.
Black repositions the knight to a5, attacking the bishop on b3 and planning ...c5-c4. One of the most respected and deeply theoretical Closed Ruy Lopez systems.
Kasparov's favourite — Black retreats the knight all the way to b8 to reroute it to d7-f8-g6 or e6. Remarkably effective despite the apparent loss of time.
