The London System is a solid, flexible opening setup for White arising after 1.d4 followed by 2.Nf3 and 3.Bf4 (or 2.Bf4), creating a stable pawn structure with pawns on d4 and e3 and a bishop actively posted on f4. The London System chess opening is defined by its reliability: White develops pieces to natural squares, reinforces the centre, and avoids sharp theoretical battles in the early opening. It is one of the fastest-growing openings at all levels of chess.
With 1,066 instructional videos on ChessTerra.com, the London System is among our most popular covered openings — reflecting its massive surge in popularity over the past decade, driven partly by Magnus Carlsen's regular use at the elite level.
The London System was played sporadically in the early 20th century but became systematically popular in the 1970s and 80s through players like Anatoly Karpov and Tony Miles. The name derives from its frequent appearance at the London tournaments of that era.
The opening truly exploded in popularity in the 2010s when Magnus Carlsen began deploying it regularly at the World Championship level, showing that the London's "quiet" reputation was misleading — in the hands of a superior positional player, it creates enormous practical problems. Gata Kamsky and Boris Gelfand were also notable practitioners. Today the London is used by players at every level, from beginners to world-class grandmasters.
The London System chess opening revolves around a few powerful strategic concepts:
A more aggressive version popularised by Georgian GM Baadur Jobava. White combines Nc3 and Bf4 for a more dynamic, attacking setup. The Jobava London has become extremely fashionable and is played by top GMs including Carlsen and Nakamura.
Black fianchettoes but White avoids the sharp King's Indian main lines entirely. The positions are less theoretical and favour White's systematic approach.
By delaying c4, White sidesteps the Nimzo-Indian entirely. This is one of the London System's greatest practical advantages — it allows White to avoid entire categories of opening theory Black may have prepared.
The London has several tactical motifs around the Bf4 bishop and the e5 square. Learning these tactical patterns prevents falling into known traps and teaches you how to exploit them against opponents who don't know the London.
The London System chess opening is particularly well suited for:
The downsides are real too:
