I open with e4 and black responds with the Kan Variation of the Sicilian Defense, a very flexible line that usually creates very sharp positions early in the opening. My 9. Re1 was definitely inaccurate as the rook is really better placed on f1 to support f4 by white. I definitely wasn’t happy with my opening play in this game, however I was able to generate some interesting counterplay in the middlegame with 20. a4 before my opponent managed to break through on the kingside. I managed to emerge from the complications with an extra rook, however I had unfortunately consumed too much time and flagged before I could convert the point.
