Peter Leko’s Brilliant Defeat of the Najdorf

Featured is brilliant game between Peter Leko and Ehsan Ghaem Maghami from the 2001 World Team Championship. In response to the Sicilian Najdorf, Polugaevsky variation, Leko plays e5 to target the pinned knight and open the position for his better developed pieces. Ghaem Maghami’s 17th move b4 to try and keep the position closed seems correct since black needs time to catch up in development. However b4 is a blunder, and shortly thereafter we witness a fantastic sacrifice of a rook that is calculated out beautifully to a position where a queen will fall in full with check. But hang on, the queen will quickly return! ๐Ÿ™‚
