Kamsky opens with e4, and Shankland responds with the Najdorf. White plays a somewhat offbeat variation, involving 6. h3 with the idea of avoiding deep theoretical preparation. Kamsky achieves the advantage of the two bishops at the cost of doubled c-pawns, however Shankland is never able to achieve sufficient counterplay. A very nice positional victory by Kamsky, demonstrating his class as a 2700 player by converting a subtle positional advantage into a solid win. This win propelled him into the US Championship Finals, which he went on to win (1.5/2) against GM Yuri Shulman. A great 2011 US Championship, well-played by Super-GM Gata Kamsky!
