Featured is Game 5 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren from the 2023 World Chess Championship match. We follow game 1’s Ruy Lopez until Nepomniachtchi deviates on move 6. After Ding’s c5, there is a fight over the d5 square. The attention soon turns towards the kingside once Nepomniachtchi sets his h-pawn in motion. Its aim is to arrive on h5 where it will have a cramping effect on black’s king position. Going into Game 5, the match is tied 2 to 2. The 2023 World Chess Championship is a best of 14-game match being played in Astana, Kazakhstan. The first player to earn 7.5 points will receive the lion’s share (60%) of the approximately $2.2 million prize pool and claim the most prestigious title in chess: ‘World Chess Champion’.
