How to punish weird “openings” · Road to GM, Game 268

What should you do when your opponent plays weird, non-theoretical openings? You should develop, castle, and play according to basic chess principles.

It’s almost always correct to meet dubious opening play with principled development. That way, regardless of what type of position you get, you will have an advantage.

That is exactly what happened in this game. I faced a lower rated opponent who neglected development, kept making strange pawn moves, and I simply brought my pieces out, not complicating the position at all. Very soon that led to material gains and a winning position.
