In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you the 14-year old Magnus Carlsen’s immortal chess game where he sacrifices literally everything; yes, he sacrificed all his pieces one after the other to deliver a beautiful checkmate!
The game was played between Magnus Carlsen playing White and Geir Sune Tallaksen Ostmoe playing Black at the Norwegian Chess Championship 2005. The Fianchetto. Nimzowitsch Variation was played from the Queen’s Indian Defense (E15).
Carlsen started his attack with a beautiful rook maneuver from Re1-Re4-Rh4 after breaking through the center. He then continued his attack by keeping his pieces active and sacrificing them one after the other to keep the momentum going. Eventually, he checkmated the opponent after sacrificing a knight, a bishop, and two rooks!
