When Tal met the Caro-Kann · Road to GM, Game 177

The Tal Variation is by far the most aggressive way to fight the Advance Caro-Kann.

White initiates a quick pawn storm on the kingside, forcing you to do something about your f5 bishop straight away. Intending to follow h4 up with g4, white gains space and, instead of going for normal development like in the Short variation, plays for the attack straight away.

I have faced this before, and gotten good positions, but in this game things turned sour quickly. My opponent chose a tricky, theoretical continuation which I did not know well enough, and I ended up deviating from theory and weakening my position very early on.
