This Is Koltanowski’s Famous “Opera Mate”

Here is a famous chess miniature played by Belgian-born American chess player and writer Georges Koltanowski! In this 15 move chess miniature Koltanowski punishes his opponent for grabbing a pawn instead of thinking about the safety of his own king and development! With a brilliant queen sacrifice Koltanowski activates his bishop and the rook and announces an opera mate! The checkmate is named after its implementation by Paul Morphy in 1858 at a game at the Paris opera against Duke Karl of Brunswick and Count Isouard.
