This is an opening for the romantic, for the brave and creative chess player.
You offer your f-pawn, immediately fighting for the initiative and challenging black for control of the center – and if your opponent isn’t prepared, they will quickly find themselves in serious trouble.
GM Damian Lemos demonstrates how, regardless of whether they accept the sacrifice or not, you can respond with force and keep tremendous pressure on your opponent.
Bobby Fischer claimed he’d found a ‘bust’ to the gambit — after losing to it, of course — but the stats show quite the opposite: most King’s Gambit games are open, unpredictable affairs where the tactical player can get exactly the positions he enjoys.
The Kings Gambit arises after the moves 1.e4 e5 2. f4.
The King’s Gambit is about the most fun you can have in chess: your pieces fly out, pawns rage forward, you sacrifice with wild abandon and announce mate on move 18. At least, this is what happened when the King’s Gambit was in full bloom during the romantic era of chess in the 18th and 19th century.
With the move 2.f4, White breaks with conventional wisdom on the main opening principles. Instead of developing his pieces, he moves a pawn away from defending his own king. Playing the King’s Gambit is a risky and double-edged choice.
White challenges Black’s center immediately and begins an attack on Black’s kingside. The main idea of the move 2.f4 is to eliminate Black’s central pawn on e5. Ideally, White would like to follow up by occupying the center with his pawns and regaining the pawn on f4.
White slightly weakens the position of his own king in order to get a pawn majority in the center, a lead in development and a quick initiative on the f-file.
