The Yugoslav Attack in the Dragon Variation of the Sicilian Defence, also known as the Rauzer System or the St George Attack, begins with the following moves: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Be3 Bg7 7. f3 O-O 8. Qd2 Nc6 9. Bc4.

In this opening, White tries to break open Black’s kingside and attack down the h-file, while Black tries to make counterplay on the queenside with sacrificial attacks. Typical White’s strategies are exchanging dark-squared bishops by Be3–Bh6, with the effective queen-bishop battery. Some typical ideas for Black are exchange White’s light-squared bishop by Nc6–Ne5–Nc4, put pressure on the c-file, and sacrifice the exchange on c3, advancing the b-pawn and pressuring the long diagonal.

In this video, the RCA Academy Manager Aggelos Kesaris has prepared a very instructive video lesson – in this video he analyzes a game played between Westerinen and Mestel in 1979. This game is a very good example for Black delivering a successful attack on the queenside.
