If you are an e4 player, then it must be hard preparing against all of black’s possible responses. A great way to reduce the amount of theory you have to study is to choose sidelines which could put black on the back foot right out of the opening. Two of those which you could play against the Pirc are the Kholmov System and the Sveshnikov System.

Both variations aim to disrupt black’s main idea in the Pirc, the hyper-modern approach in which black castles short, fianchettoes his bishop and breaks open the center afterwards.

The Sveshnikov System starts after the moves 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. g3. The move g3 aims to create a fianchetto setup for white, which will then provide for a kingside attack most often including moves such as f4; aggressively taking up space and pushing the black pieces back. The biggest upside of this opening (even though the engines give it as equal) is that white puts black out of his comfort zone and aims to have an interesting, off-beat game which is nowhere near the normal Pirc.

The Kholmov System, on the other hand, aims to attack black as soon as possible. After 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Bc4, white has developed his bishop to the most active diagonal, and he will aim to attack the f7 weakness in the Italian Game fashion. White goes for blitzkrieg and black has to be careful! The Kholmov System is one of the most exciting lines in the Pirc, and it includes several brilliant piece and queen sacrifices which could be employed against black’s passive defenses.

If you are looking for an aggressive system or for an interesting sideline with which you could surprise 1…d6 players, consider using one of these systems. They are fun and different. Good luck!
