Magnus Carlsen vs Fabiano Caruana | Game 7 – 2018 World Chess Championship

World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defends his title against challenger Fabiano Caruana of the United States in Game 7 of the 2018 World Chess Championship match that is being held in London. It’s a best of 12 games where the first player to earn 6.5 points earns the lion’s share of a $1.14 million prize pool, and the title of “World Chess Champion”. Both players entered game 6 deadlocked with 3 points each. We follow game 2 of this match with play deviating on move 10. Carlsen tries his hand this time with Nd2 instead of Rd1. An interesting middlegame ensues where there is the potential for Carlsen to damage Caruana’s kingside structure. This idea, if played, would have likely cost Carlsen a pawn. The path followed results in a symmetrical structure where the focus soon shifts in the endgame from piece placement to a minor piece imbalance.
