Many 1.e4 players ask themselves the same question again and again – What to play against the Sicilian Defense in order to crush Black’ setup?
Most chess players believe that White has to go for sharp lines against the Sicilian as Black almost always has the better structure in the endgame.
If White does not crush Black right out of the opening, he’ll suffer a long and unpleasant endgame. However, this is only half the story!
White does not necessarily have to crush Black tactically in the Sicilian Defense. A brilliant chess strategy to outplay club players who play the Sicilian Defense against the 1.e4 is to go for a positional setup – the Maroczy Bind.
The Maroczy Bind is characterized by White pawns on the squares c4 and e4, with White’s d-pawn having been exchanged for Black’s c-pawn (see the diagram on the right). This opening setup is named after the Hungarian grandmaster Géza Maróczy. Maroczy Bind: Crush the Sicilian Defense
Against many of Black’s setups in the Sicilian Defense, the Maroczy Bind turns out to be an effective system in order to restrict Black’s activity. and primarily played against the Sicilian Defence. Due to the fact that White’s pawns control the squares b5 and d5, Black can’t easily break open the position.
White controls the center and Black has to know exactly what he is doing in order to bring his pieces to the right squares. He has to be patient and play a position with less space for his spaces than White has.
The Maroczy Bind can arise from various lines in the Sicilian Defense. The most famous line in the Maroczy Bind arises from the Accelerated Dragon after the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6, followed by 5.c4 (see the diagram on the left). The Maroczy Bind setup is a perfect example of long-term chess strategy.
In this free video, IM Valeri Lilov shows you plenty of ideas to use this setup against the Sicilian Defense. Watch how White keeps increasing the pressure, picking up on tiny positional weaknesses to gradually improve his pieces until his opponent cracks.
