A Bizarre Fantasy – Vassily Ivanchuk vs Baadur Jobava

When two highly creative chess players like Vassily Ivanchuk (white) and Baadur Jobava (black) face each other, it should come as no surprise an original chess position springs about, and fast! This game was played at the 2010 Chess Olympiad, held in Khanty-Mansiysk. Ivanchuk elects the Fantasy variation in reply to Jobava’s Caro-Kann Defense. Ivanchuk’s early a3, largely a waiting move, provokes Jobava to demonstrate that it’s a poor decision to neglect development. Once Jobava’s energetic reply e5 is played, a most unusual, and memorable position surfaces.
