13-year-old Magnus Carlsen’s picturesque mate

This game between 13-year-old Magnus Carlsen (white), and Sipke Ernst (black) was the penultimate round of the Group C section of the Corus Chess Tournament of 2004. Both Magnus Carlsen and Sipke Ernst were International Masters at the time, Carlsen becoming a Grandmaster a few months later, and Ernst a couple years later. Carlsen’s picturesque mate against Ernst secured him his 1st Grandmaster norm. Watch the young mind at work execute a beautiful attacking combination from a seemingly quiet looking position out of a Caro-Kann Defense, Main Line.
