Caro-Kann Panov – Ding Liren refutes the pawn sacrifice on c4

An instructive Caro-Kann game played between Hou Yifan and Ding Liren in the 2015. Tata Steel Tournament.

Ding Liren has managed to exploit Hou Yifan’s pawn sacrifice with brilliant positional play, not allowing white to have any compensation for the pawn.

A great example of solving the “problematic white squared bishop” that often occurs in Caro-Kann positions with 4. c4, and it’s either blocked on c8, or, if developed, tends to miss in the defense of the c6 square.
