Chess Strategy Training: Bobby Fischer’s Greatest Traps
“Setting traps is prophylaxis for beggars. You try to read your opponent’s mind and see how you can get him to make a mistake. It will not work every time, but it can be a really useful skill to turn to, when everything else has failed.”
This is a quote from the famous chess coach and book author Jacob Aagaard. In his excellent chess book “Grandmaster Preparation – Calculation by Jacob Aagaard” he talks about the importance of setting traps to your opponent.
Setting traps, of course, does not mean to play dubious moves with only one tricky idea. Of course, if the opponent does not find the right move, he will lose. However, if he plays a good move, we find ourselves in a bad position. These are not the kind of traps you should aim for.
Advanced traps can be part of a great chess strategy. You set these traps in a more subtle way by simply following your plan but giving your opponent some additional opportunities to go wrong.
Bobby Fischer was an expert in setting chess traps. For this reason, IM Valeri Lilov analyzes one of Fischer’s greatest chess traps in the following video.
