Wilhelm Steinitz was the first official World Chess Champion. His thoughts and writings about the game were very influential at the time and now he is usually called “the father of positional play”. Although some of his ideas may sound strange to modern eyes, they were the founding rocks of all the positional themes we all know now. Tarrasch and Lasker, among others, recognized Steinitz as their “teacher”.
In this free preview of his brand new course, Lenderman Method 2: Chess Secrets of the World Champions, GM Aleksandr Lenderman examines Steinitz’s most instructive positional sacrifices, As you will see from his games, many of his sacrifices were later on used by many other World Chess Champions.
In the first example, Lenderman shows how the Austrian Champion sacrifices a full piece to catch the opponent’s king in the center. After that, he exerted so much pressure that Black found unable to defend himself from the tactical storm.
The second example is a master class on attacking the kingside. What impress me more about this attack is Steinitz use of the h-pawn. He first used it to control the g4-square and jump with a knight there. This threat forced White to weaken his kingside. But the, the first WC also used this advance to activate his Rh8 via h6 to g6!
Steinitz Positional SacrificesHowever, the last example is, in my humble view, the most impressive.
In this position, Black wants to exchange rooks and queens using the open b-file. After that, it will be impossible for him to lose the endgame.
