The Ultimate Scandinavian Trap

The Scandinavian Defense is one of the most popular defenses in the Club level. With the open center and fluid development, Black hope to trick his opponent with one of the many traps he has. And, in any case, his solid pawn structure usually leads him to stable positions.

But, the Scandinavian has a major problem: the black queen gets exposed. So, if White plays aggressively he can quickly have a lead in development.

That’s the point of IM Valeri Lilov in this free preview of his course Ideas Behind the Openings, in which he practically refutes one of the most popular variations at Club level.

Take for example this position, extracted from one of the many lines that IM Lilov analyses: Scandinavian

It’s clear that White’s position in preferable: better development and more compact pawn structure. But Lilov demonstrates that White is simply winning here.

White has to open the position to take advantage of his more active pieces, so the key move is 10.d5!

After 10…exd5 11.Nxd5 Nxd5 12.Bxd5 Bxd5 13.Qxd5 White is attacking the Ra8 and the f7-pawn, so Black can already resign.

White has other possibilities, but after 10.d5 his position is collapsing.

This is just one example of the many tactical ideas that White has to destroy Black’s position. And, what’s more important, Black has no good defense!

Armed with this powerful analysis, you won’t have more problems against the once feared Scandinavian Defense!
