Learning the art of chess defense is essential if you want to become a strong player. In fact, the ability to take your opponent’s best shots and emerge unscathed is the sign of a champion, a real warrior.
It should come as no surprise that both the first and current World Champions, Wilhelm Steinitz and Magnus Carlsen, are notorious for their iron-clad chess defense. Bobby Fischer, too, was happy to defend for 40+ moves against the best players in the world in exchange for a mere pawn. Then we have Tigran Petrosian and Viktor Korchnoi, 2 battle-hardened fighters who invited attacks for the sheer fun of frustrating their rivals!
But most club players are sorely lacking in this area. Countless losses could be avoided by understanding the principles of successful chess defense. And it’s not just about saving half points. Strong players understand that putting up a tough defense often leads to victory when the impatient attacker over-presses.
If you’ve ever lost a game you knew wasn’t winning for your opponent then check out IM Sopiko Guramishvili’s “Advanced Defense” course, featuring the principles that will turn you into a brick wall.
In this free preview, Sopiko demonstrates one of her games. Playing as Black against GM Nana Dzagnidze, Sopiko soon finds her King very exposed in the center of the board and, to make matters worse, she has weak pawns which become targets.
Most club players crumble in this type of position. After watching this video, however, you’ll understand some of the key ideas behind a successful defense.
Sopiko conjures up an ideal formation for her pieces which will keep both her King safe and her pawns protected. Now she must achieve this formation while countering her opponent’s new threats.
As the game continues IM Guramishvili bravely walks a tightrope, taking every opportunity to get her pieces more active while not being afraid of dangerous-looking checks. Watch this video and you’ll get a good feel for successful chess defense, the combination of counterplay, safety and courage.
