We all know the importance of calculation and tactics in chess but how should we improve our skill in these critical areas? Solving puzzles is great for adding new patterns to your memory and keeping your brain sharp but it is of limited use in a real game.

If you don’t see an opportunity for a tactic, do you just play a sensible positional move? There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but if you want to be able to conjure up complications almost at will, you’ll greatly improve your ability by taking advice from master tactician GM Matthew Sadler.

GM Sadler’s course “Exploring Tactics“, focuses on advanced chess tactics, teaching you how to find hidden opportunities and evaluate long-term sacrifices.

In this free preview, Matthew reveals his thought process during one of his games. Having camped 2 Knights threateningly close to his opponent’s King, Matthew was in no mood to settle for a positional plus by planting one of them on d5.

GM Sadler weighs up the justification for the attack:

+ his attacking force is superior to the defensive force
+ he has a number of possible sacrifices to use if needed
– Black will win a pawn and gain a protected passed pawn for himself
+ White has a defensive resource undermining the protection of Black’s passed pawn
Once the decision to attack has been made, GM Sadler works out the best way to go about it. Watch the video to discover how a Super GM deals with advanced chess tactics in a competitive game.
