Blitz Chess #348: Benko Gambit Declined with 5. b6

This is a blitz chess game I played as white with time control 5|2. The opening was the Benko Gambit Declined with 5. b6. The idea with b6 is to not allow black’s a-pawn to be exchanged, thus neutralizing some of the heavy major piece pressure black normally acquires in the accepted variation. White enjoys a cramping effect on the black position by maintaining a strong white pawn on d5. This inherent space advantage is often that much more an asset when all four minor pieces remain on board.

I’m a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who learned how to play from my father in 1988 at the age of 8.
