Black has a funny looking move in the French Winawer which is nevertheless gaining popularity. After the opening moves 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 he plays 3…Nc6!?

Why does Black play this? It blocks in his c-pawn which is normally used to attack d4. Well after 4.Nf3 Nf6 Black tempts White to play 5.e5 and after Nd7 he will be able to get a very powerful attack on e5 with …f6. With 2 Knights focusing their attention on this square, White will not be able to keep the pawn there, forcing an eventual exf6 when Black frees his position.

It’s new trends like these that GM Roman Dzindzichashvili tackles in his course “New Lines for White against the Sicilian, French, Hippo, Latvian“. Knowing what to do when faced with unusual moves like this is very important for your success in the game.

In this preview, Roman demonstrates how a Grandmaster played this position in simple but devastatingly accurate fashion to defeat another GM. The key idea: to delay playing e4-e5 as long as possible, instead putting pressure on other points in Black’s position and making him attend to those threats.

Enjoy the game and Roman’s explanations and, if you want to know more, check out the full course here.
