Chess strategy involves evaluating positions and setting goals and long-term plans for future play. Being able to assess a position and its requirements accurately will allow you to win games without your opponent even knowing where they went wrong!

This ability really separates the best from the rest. Garry Kasparov made the point that “Tactics involve calculations that can tax the human brain, but when you boil them down, they are actually the simplest part of chess and are almost trivial compared to strategy.”

If you wish to improve this area of your game then there really is no better way than to study GM games with strategic themes. This was the inspiration for GM Damian Lemos’ latest DVD, “Crushing Strategy” in which he analyzes 4 games in-depth, showing what the winner correctly identified and what their opponent missed.

In this preview, Lemos talks us through a Sicilian Defense, Accelerated Dragon in which White was able to get pawns on c4 and e4 early on – the Maroczy Bind. This set-up makes it more difficult for Black to play his freeing move …d5.

This game is a perfect example of long-term chess strategy.

Watch how White keeps increasing the pressure, picking up on tiny positional weaknesses to gradually improve his pieces until his opponent cracks. The way a clear plan is formed and executed is highly instructive for the improving player.

Enjoy the game and remember to check out the DVD.
