In the video “Step-by-Step Maneuvering in Closed Positions” by GM Roman Dzindzichashvili, we are shown a game played by Tigran Petrosian where he masterfully maneuvers his pieces in a closed position.

Black makes a pawn move to a dark square early in the game that seems to strengthen his center, when in reality it actually leaves a lot of weak squares for White to use. Later White is able to provoke Black to advance more pawns to dark squares and begins to take advantage of the holes in Black’s position.

After Black has put all his pawns on dark squares, White follows with a pawn sacrifice in order to get rid of Black’s light square bishop that is defending many key squares. Once the bishop has been removed, Black’s dark square bishop watches helplessly as White’s knights are able to dominate the light squares in this closed position.

How does Roman explain the beauty behind Petrosian’s moves? Once Petrosian has created an overwhelming position, how does he finish the game off? Watch the video to find out!
