Get ready for this Garry Kasparov masterclass in attacking play against the English grandmaster Jon Speelman! This fascinating attacking game took place in the 1989 World Cup, with Garry Kasparov, as the reigning World Champion, the clear favorite.

It should be said that GM Jon Speelman was no ordinary player himself. Exceptionally creative at the chess board, Speelman was an artist, always looking to create new, different positions and explore them for the “truth” of chess.

However, sometimes GM Speelman could be too creative for his own good, neglecting classic rules of chess opening development – a dangerous recipe against an attacking genius like Garry Kasparov!

What follows is a devastating 25 move victory via a highly instructive attack with Kasparov developing rapidly, making direct threats and sacrificing material to gain the time for the merciless execution.

This is a Garry Kasparov masterclass in attacking play and the art of chess sacrifice. Kasparov, playing White, opens 1.d4 and we get the Robatsch after 1…d6 and a kingside fianchetto for Black.

Normally, after fianchettoing, players only move the other pawns on that side if they really have to, knowing it weakens the position. But Speelman felt he had to follow …g6 with …h6 as early as move 8, after Kasparov made his intentions clear with h4.

For Black to continue advancing pawns with 9…f5 looks like suicide but he seems to get away with it. Multiple exchanges leave a Black bishop on f5, raking across the board, and the king casually hops over to the safety of the queenside.

Now comes Garry’s real attack! He launches forward with 14.b4! sacrificing a pawn and opening up the long diagonal for his opponent’s fianchettoed bishop. On top of that, Kasparov has pinned his own piece!

To the casual onlooker, 14.b4 looks terrible but Kasparov has seen it all. Chess sacrifice after chess sacrifice follows as Garry Kasparov blows up the Black king’s defenses and wins a fantastic, memorable game.
