One of the best chess openings for Black is undoubtedly the French Defense. It is appropriate at all levels of play, whether you’re a beginner or intermediate player, all the way to the upper echelons of the game. It has been played by countless top players including Mikhail Botvinnik, Ulf Andersson, Viktor Korchnoi, Vassily Ivanchuk, Hikaru Nakamura and the current World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen.

In this video, GM Susan Polgar goes through some of the basics of the French Defense, explaining what makes it one of the best chess openings for Black. Susan has a particular affinity for this opening as it was the first she ever learned, and it has brought her many wins and exciting battles throughout her career. While the French can get complex at times, it is still suitable for all levels due to the fact it is based on general understanding of the strategies behind it, the pawn structures and tactical motifs.

The French Defense starts with 1. e4 e6. In this video, Susan talks about what happens next, no matter what White plays – c4, f4, e5, Nf3. The most common reply for Black now is 2…d5. Extra attention is given to when White plays 2. d3 with a thorough analysis of a game Susan played herself in 1981. That game began with 1. e4 e6 2. d3 d5 3. Nd2 Nf6 4. Nf3 Nc6 (Susan’s recommended move!), 5. g3. Here, a good system for Black is to capture with 5…dxe4 6. dxe4 e5.

It’s true that 6. e5 might look like it breaks the chess opening rules of not moving a piece more than once until all pieces are developed, but Susan shows how in this case an exception should be made as it blocks White’s pawn from advancing, hemming in White’s bishop when it fianchettoes!
