This Round 4 game between Gata Kamsky and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov from the 2013 FIDE World Cup Knockout Chess Tournament, held in Tromsø, Norway, certainly brought fireworks on board and was nothing short of brilliant. Mamedyarov chose the Sicilian Defense Taimanov (Bastrikov) variation against Kamsky’s e4. The middle game was of particular interest as many white pieces were poised behind an e4-f4 pawn duo. A couple white pawn advances by Kamsky into Mamedyarov’s territory brought to life all white pieces, producing a highly dynamic position where calculation ability and accurate assessment of potential variations preceded all else. Might this game be Kamsky’s Immortal?
