During his dominant reign as the 13th world chess champion, Garry Kasparov was playing some of the most aggressive chess ever seen in the history of the game. Many of Garry Kasparov´s games were downright inspirational as he consistently sought to maximize complications and pressure against his unfortunate opponents.

In the follow chess video, we will examine a legendary King’s Indian Defense game between Vladimir Kramnik vs Garry Kasparov. This game took place 6 years before their World Chess Championship 2000 match but Vladimir Kramnik was already one of the strongest chess players in the world and considered a major threat to Garry Kasparov’s crown – even by Kasparov himself.

Ever the fighter, Garry Kasparov decides to teach the young pretender a lesson and he employs an early queen sacrifice very similar to the Bronstein Variation of the King´s Indian Defense.

The queen sacrifice occurs as early as move 12 when Kasparov moved his seemingly pinned f6 knight, capturing a pawn but placing his queen en prise. Vladimir Kramnik takes Kasparov up on the challenge and captures the queen. In compensation for the sacrificed queen, Kasparov obtains 2 minor pieces and a pawn accompanied by an incredibly dangerous initiative across the entire board.

As soon as Garry played his shocking queen sacrifice, everyone knew they were about to see one of Kasparov’s immortal games. Everything just flows for Black from this point on: the long diagonal is opened up for the bishop. Black supports the e4 pawn which, in turn, gives Kasparov a powerful outpost on d3 for his knights.

Soon enough the pressure is too much for Vladimir Kramnik who returns material to go into a Queenless position 2 pawns down. But the pressure doesn’t stop. Garry Kasparov vs Vladimir Kramnik ends with some intricate maneuvering and tactical threats which make a pawn promotion inevitable.

This game is a true masterpiece, a classic Garry Kasparov masterclass, and boasts extremely high instructive value for playing actively and dynamically in positions of material imbalance.
