Chess for beginners might be overwhelming. With so many moves available, it can be tough to work out which moves to make and how to attack your opponent. In this video, FM Valeri Lilov shows you some basic chess strategy tips for aggressive, attacking play.
Attacking can be tough at any level, all the way up to the elite players. It might be easier to find some tactical combination, but putting together a consistent attack can be a challenge. FM Lilov takes a look at a game that begins in the Four Knights variation, a chess opening he enjoys very much due to the fact it is easy to play, and gives Black some great counter-attacking opportunities.
In the game, White strikes out early, breaking some of the basic rules of the chess opening, in an attempt to attack the weak f7 square. FM Lilov shows how to respond to enemy threats in order not to create long term problems. For example, leaving a piece hanging or in an awkward spot can be just the sort of thing the opponent can exploit sooner or later.
It’s far better to play for the initiative! What is the initiative? A good chess strategy is to play the moves with the highest range of attack – a sequence of moves that cut out the opponents chances of attacking you, prevents them from controlling the game and makes it difficult for them to consolidate their position. These special moves you should look for are checks, captures, and direct threats.
The secret to a good attack is to bring as many pieces as possible over to the area of the board where the attack is happening! Even if you don’t have a specific plan of attack, having more pieces on the battlefield will increase your chances, and your attack will be stronger than your opponents. Find a good target, then bring as many of your pieces as you can into the attack.
