Kingscrusher, also known as Tryfon Gavriel, and host of one of the most popular youtube chess channels, took on the Japanese-American Super Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura (peak rating 2816 and number 2 in the world!). In this video, FIDE Master Will Stewart analyses the blitz game in which Kingscrusher opened with a strange move order that resulted in the Double Fianchetto opening.

This chess opening has been played by the greats, in particular the legendary Garry Kasparov, Wei Yi and probably the opening’s best exponent, Vladimir Kramnik (World Champion 2000-2007) – so it’s got some good pedigree! Typical of modern chess openings, White decides to fianchetto the bishops so that they exert indirect pressure over the center of the board, looking to undermine the opponent’s pieces there.

One of the major benefits of the fianchetto is that it often allows the bishop to be very active. On the flip side, the opponent also gets some opportunities if they manage to exchange the bishops off the board as it creates permanent weaknesses around the king and can form the basis of an attack. Players should therefore always be very cautious about trading off the fianchetto bishop, and never do it lightly.

How does Hikaru Nakamura respond to the Double Fianchetto Opening? By crushing it! Nakamura responds with very direct play to trade off White´s kingside fianchettoed bishop on the g2 square, which leads to a permanent weakening of the protection around White´s king.

Nakamura´s play is very instructional as he seizes the initiative with direct and logical maneuvers in the center, and then he transforms his advantage in the center into a decisive kingside attack – leading to the win of two pawns and the shattering of White´s kingside.

Kingscrusher played well and fought hard but it´s tough to go toe-to-toe with one of the world´s best! Not only that, but Nakamura is an absolute master of playing rapid and blitz games, having ranked number 1 in the world on both of those lists.
