GM Levon Aronian (2808, Armenia) Vs GM Alexander Grischuk (2747, Russia) — 2011 Candidates Tournament, Quarter-Finals Rapid Tiebreaker

Aronian opens with Nf3 and c4, quickly steering this phase of the game into the English Opening. Grischuk responds somewhat aggressively by staking a solid claim to the center with pawns on c5 and e5. White plays passively and does not attempt to seize any initiative, as such black essentially maintains a free hand in the center and gains space with moves such as f5 and f4. I was disappointed in Aronian’s timid play in this game, as it seemed he had the white pieces but was playing for a draw. A nice positional win by Grischuk, taking a 1-0 lead in the tiebreaker.
