Open games agreement
1. What the map is
The map shows chess games that players put on it themselves: a board that is set up right now, a board that will be set up at a stated time, and places where chess clubs meet. ChessTerra, operated by Haselton Media Group, provides the map only. We do not organize, supervise or attend games, we do not check who players are, and we do not check the places they choose.
2. Who can use it
Anyone can look at the map. You must be 18 or older to put a game on the map or to say you are coming to one. You must use your own account and you are responsible for what is posted from it.
3. Public places only
Every pin must be a public place where people are welcome to sit and play, such as a cafe, library, park, chess club, food court or game store. Never put a home, hotel room, vehicle or any other private place on the map, and do not go to one for a game you found here. Follow the rules of the place you choose and leave if staff ask you to.
4. Your pin is public
Anyone who opens the map can see the place and time on your pin. Players who are logged in also see your display name. A pin for a game that is on now tells people where you are right now. It is taken down at the end time you set, and you can take it down sooner. Do not put a pin on the map if you do not want to be found there. Leave phone numbers, emails, links and home addresses out of notes.
5. Your safety is your responsibility
- Play where other people are around, and stay there.
- Tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Arrange your own way there and back.
- Keep an eye on your belongings and do not bring valuables you do not need.
- Leave if anything feels wrong. You never owe anyone a game.
- In an emergency call 911 or your local emergency number.
6. How to behave
Be the opponent you would want to sit down with. No harassment, threats, hate, sexual advances, selling, recruiting or gambling. Only put a game on the map if there will really be a board there. If the board comes down early, take the pin down so nobody makes the trip for nothing.
7. Reports, removal and blocking
Every pin has a report button. Reports go to the site owner. We may hide or remove any pin and block any account from the map at our discretion, with or without notice. We may share information with law enforcement when the law requires it or when we believe someone is at risk.
8. Messages we send
When the first player says they are coming to your game, we email you at the address on your account. If a game you said you were coming to is taken down before it ends, we email you about that too.
9. You take part at your own risk
Playing with people you have not met carries risks that ChessTerra cannot control. To the fullest extent the law allows, the map is provided as it is, without warranties, and you agree that Haselton Media Group and the people who run ChessTerra are not responsible for the conduct of any player, for the condition or safety of any place, or for any injury, loss or damage that comes from a game found on the map or from using the map. You release them from claims of that kind.
10. Changes
We may update this agreement. When we do, you will be asked to accept the new version before you put a game on the map or say you are coming again.
