Caruana Crushes His Friend’s Nimzo-Indian in 27 Moves

Featured is a dynamic chess game between Fabiano Caruana and Grigoriy Oparin from Round 1 of the 2025 U.S. Chess Championship. Facing Oparin’s Nimzo-Indian Defense, Caruana chooses the Classical Variation and encourages an early capture on c3. Instead of the usual queen recapture, Caruana takes back with the pawn. Oparin’s 10th move soon proves to practically be a serious inaccuracy, as Caruana responds with the energetic g4, seizing the initiative. The position becomes razor-sharp, and the open g-file allows Caruana to mount a decisive attack against Oparin’s king.
