Stockfish Smashes Leela’s Slav Defense

Featured is an instructive chess game between Stockfish and Leela Chess Zero from the Top Chess Engine Championship, Season 28 Bonus Edition, Game 73. The game begins as a Slav Defense, reaching the start position after 8…Bd6. The early middlegame revolves around Stockfish’s knight on g3 and Leela’s bishop on g4. Stockfish avoids forcing a trade, focusing instead on development. Leela replies with 9…Nh5, ensuring the light-squared bishop remains on the board, but ultimately it plays no productive role. Stockfish’s queenside space grab with c5 secures a long-term advantage, and by move 16 (Rfe1), the superiority of Stockfish’s rooks over Leela’s becomes clear. In the endgame Leela reaches a material advantage of five pawns versus Stockfish’s knight and single pawn, yet Stockfish is able to preserve the pawn and arrives at a theoretical tablebase win after 75 moves. The time control for this game is 30 minutes each with a 3-second increment per move.
