Featured is an excellent chess game between Sergey Karjakin and Viswanathan Anand from the 2006 Corus Group A tournament. Out of the Sicilian Najdorf, English Attack, we see a good 21 moves of opening theory in a sharp opposite-sides castling battle. Anand repeatedly ignores White’s threats, instead creating stronger counterplay to try to seize the initiative. The critical moment comes after Anand places his queen on a8, forming a deadly battery on the a-file while also targeting e4. Karjakin’s response is a blunder, and Anand finds four consecutive only moves, involving a double minor-piece sacrifice, ripping away Karjakin’s key kingside defender and launching a winning attack.
