Seirawan’s Caveman Attack in the English Smashes Sokolov

Featured is a sharp chess game between Yasser Seirawan and Ivan Sokolov from Sarajevo, 1987. Out of the English Opening, Anglo-Grünfeld Variation, Seirawan launches a direct caveman-style kingside attack against Sokolov’s weakened kingside. The assault closely resembles the Yugoslav Attack against the Sicilian Dragon, with the key plan being to eliminate Black’s dark-squared bishop and pry open the h-file. One particularly instructive detail is Seirawan’s choice to place his queen on c1 instead of the more natural d2 on move 8, with the impact of this decision only becoming clear by move 22.
