In this game, the 14-year-old Bobby Fischer was White against James Sherwin. Fischer used the King’s Indian Attack setup (1.Nf3, 2.g3, 3.Bg2, etc.), a flexible system he liked in his youth.
The battle revolved around central tension. At a critical moment, Sherwin failed to push …c4, which would have locked up the queenside and restricted Fischer’s play. Instead, Fischer seized the initiative, opening lines with precise pawn breaks and piece activity.
Once Fischer’s pieces sprang to life, Sherwin’s position collapsed quickly. Fischer converted his advantage into a powerful kingside attack, demonstrating the importance of timing in pawn breaks.
The game is remembered as a classic example of how missing one key pawn thrust (…c4) can turn a solid setup into a passive, losing position. It also showed Fischer’s growing positional understanding at just 14, foreshadowing the world champion he would become.
