Joshua Waitzkin’s Beautiful Chess Combination

This is an instructive chess game between 10-year-old Joshua Waitzkin and Edward Frumkin from the 1987 New York Open. Out of the Sicilian Defense, Four Knights, the play first centers on the queenside. After a couple inaccuracies by Frumkin, Waitzkin establishes an iron grip over the key dark squares c5 and d4. With White’s knights soon anchored there, Black’s counterplay on the kingside becomes very limited. With everything under control on the queenside, Waitzkin gradually shifts play toward the kingside and finishes with an aesthetic combination leading straight to checkmate.

I’m a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly.
