Stonewall Dutch GONE WRONG? | Grenke Chess Festival 2025

Featured is an instructive freestyle chess game between Leon Luke Mendonca and Ian Nepomniachtchi from round 3 of the Grenke Chess Festival 2025. From start position #9 there are no unprotected pawns, and oddball bishops that will need to move to be productive. Moreover castling towards the c-file is unlikely since 4 pieces must first be moved. No castles is more likely than castles at all with this setup. After only 9 moves we see a structure similar to the Stonewall Dutch, however with the inclusion of h5 it’s more like a Stonewall Dutch gone wrong! Mendonca’s nearly perfect play shows us how one can exploit the weaknesses black has created on the e5/g5/f4 squares. Time controls for this game are 90 minutes each with a 30-second increment throughout.

I’m a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly.
