Kasparov Breaks Yusupov’s Bogo-Indian

Featured is an excellent chess game between Garry Kasparov and Artur Yusupov from the 1981 USSR Championship, Frunze. In response to Yusupov’s Bogo-Indian Defense, Kasparov chooses to first block the check with Bd2 and then fianchetto the light-squared bishop. Shortly thereafter we observe a minor piece imbalance, were Kasparov gives Yusupov an unopposed dark-squared bishop. The ensuing battle revolves around this imbalance with Kasparov sacrificing a pawn in exchange for a monster pawn trio which grants him significant space. Kasparov’s star 31st move soon places Yusupov in a difficult only-move situation on the kingside that he was unable to solve.
