The best variation against the Sicilian · Road to GM, Game 348

If you’re struggling against the Sicilian, play this! You will get interesting attacking positions and the Sicilian players will be outside their comfort zone since there will be very little theory and White will be the one attacking!

This was a key game and a key match. If we wim, we qualify for the finals of the Croatian cup and win the Zagreb cup, the first team competition I played for my new team. So, naturally, I wanted to get a sharp position in which I’ll be in charge. I chose the Closed Sicilian since there was no way many pieces would get traded off.

It started off well. I was an hour up on the clock and my opponent’s position was awful. I was attacking with almost all my pieces. I could have won relatively easily, but I didn’t. I started making dubious decisions and my advantage evaporated.

I ended up drawing the game, and we ended up drawing the match. That meant that the winner of the cup was to be decided in the last round, which my team wouldn’t play, since there was an odd number of teams and we had a bye. What happened then was a thriller!
