Paul Morphy’s Philidor Countergambit storms Barnes

Featured is a sharp chess game between Thomas Barnes and Paul Morphy from 1858. Out of a Philidor Countergambit, an objectively dubious opening, Paul Morphy allows Thomas Barnes to hunt his king rook. As is typical with Morphy games, he obtains excellent piece activity and a lead in development. These positives sonn translate into a beautiful combination involving deflection and clearance sacrifices that first cost Barnes his queen, and soon thereafter his king.

I’m a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly.
